THE MOST COMMON JOB INTERVIEW MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

Preparing for the interview could be a real headache: you have to make a great first impression (and let’s be honest, how often that happens?); you have to do your research; practice the uncomfortable questions, moreover, your outfit should be on point. And even when everything seems to go smooth, you could slip so easily and fail your dream interview.

That is why FG ATELIER team made the list of the most common mistakes that are made during the job interviews and here are our TOP 5.

NO. 1 Making a So-called Weakness Seem Positive

One of the most common questions during the interview – “What are your weaknesses?”. This question is often hard to answer. Usually, people tend to answer like “I am a perfectionist” or “I am a workaholic” or even worst – “I really care too much”. This way your so-called weakness is turned into a strength.

Interviewers are not impressed, because they've probably heard the same answer a hundred times. If you are asked this question, highlight a skill that you wish to improve upon and describe what you are doing to enhance your skill in this area. Interviewers don't care what your weaknesses are. They want to see how you handle the question and what your answer indicates about you.

NO. 2 Talking Salary and Benefits

The first interview is not the time and the place to discuss compensation, vacation days, bonus system or other benefits. At the first interview you have to talk about your experience, what do you and an employee expects. You have to show your genuine interest in the position, not the paycheck. Save all those topics for the final interview, unless the hiring manager broaches the subject.

NO. 3 Talking Too Much

One of the most important thing to keep in mind – be professional. No matter how warm, welcoming or kind your interviewer may be, job interview must have bounders. There is nothing worse than interviewing someone who goes on and on.

Keep your answers to-the-point and focused. Don’t get sidetracked and start talking about your personal life – your spouse, children or dog. Of course, sometimes your interviewer can ask you some personal questions – answer them honestly but shortly. This is not the time to be too personal.

NO. 4 Forgetting That The Interview is A Two-Way Street

If you are a professional and know your job best then an employee needs you just as much as you need him, or even more. That is why you also have to have questions for them. You need to ask questions to discover more about the job, the people you would be working with and the environment. Prepare the list of questions – show your interviewer that you genuinely care about the position. After all, you need to decide if you would be happy working there for at least one year.

NO. 5 Flirting or Other Inappropriate Behavior

Making a good first impression is hard, especially when you are nervous. That is why some people tend to start flirting and making inappropriate jokes as a way of relaxation. Even if your interviewer seems into it – that is not a good start. You may leave the wrong impression and you may be hired for the wrong reasons. Keep it to yourself, be polite, smile, make a joke if necessary, but don’t forget to act professional and leave all the flirting and joking aside.

Remember, that sometimes you can do everything right and you can leave a great impression, but still somebody else can have the job. When that happens – do not give up, because it can be the best thing that happened to you that day. Because it leads to better offers, better jobs, and a better future.
