10 GREAT CAREER LESSONS WE LEARN TOO LATE

Too many people are doing the wrong things for all the wrong reasons. We stick to the job that we hate, just because it pays the bills. We forget about our teenage dreams because it sounds too dreamy. We lie to our friends and family that we are really happy at work when actually we are constantly counting minutes to the next weekend. We stop ourselves from saying our mind or expressing ideas because we think that nobody would listen. And unfortunately, we learn all those things way too late.

According to Jan Moore, Midlife Transition Coach at Self-Employment, the first thing you have to do is to be true to yourself and decide what kind of lifestyle you want to have and find a meaningful work for yourself that will support a lifestyle of your choice.

Career advice that we learn too late

Unfortunately, not many people can do that. As Albert Einstein once said: the important thing is not the answer - is the right question. When you ask yourself the right question, the answer will appear. And you will know why you are at your job and where are you heading to.

So today's question is: what is the main career advice that people learn too late and why do we need to know them?

1. PASSION - THE KEY TO SUCCESS

We all know that, but we forget it more than often. If you want to live a happy life, you have to focus on your passions. If that passion doesn’t pay the bills yet, make it an extra job or freelance. For instance, if you love photography, you can volunteer over your free time, step by step you will build background and eventually you could make it your everyday job.

2. SEEK OUT FOR PEOPLE WHO YOU IMAGINE YOU MIGHT BE SOMEDAY

Be sincere and honest, do not be afraid to talk to people that you seek, say that you admire their work and ask for advice, you’d be surprised how many people are really willing to help you. Of course, be prepared to hear a couple of “no” along the way. Most importantly, if you finally get the meeting - keep your eyes and ears open. Successful people don’t waste time and rarely gives second chances.

3. LOOKING AT THE BIGGER PICTURE - LEADS TO HIGHER POSITIONS

Too few people think of the BIG picture. When you work in a huge company, you rarely raise your head out of a desk and think about what is the real problem and how can you help to solve it? Or what is the important project that your company works with now? People tend not to get involved even when they want to. They are afraid of rejection, as a consequence, they usually stay at the lower level that they could be.

4. GET TO KNOW YOURSELF

To be great at your job or to find the right career path, first of all, you have to know your strengths. The best way to do that is to try different jobs and different activities. As the Steves Jobs once said: keep on looking and don’t settle until you feel that it’s right.

5. MONEY ISN’T EQUAL TO HAPPINESS

Too many people keeping their passion aside just because they could make a living and pay the bills. Recently I watched an interview with an investor who by the age of 30 had his dreams come true: a dream job, an apartment at the upper east side, a huge salary and there was just one more box left to fill - becoming a partner on his firm, and he landed it! His boss asked him to his office and said - ‘you got the promotion, we want you to be a partner’. He got back to his great corner office, shut the doors and start crying. Why? He said that at that moment he understood that now he is really trapped. And there is no way back.

The moral? Stop pressuring yourself for something that does not make you happy. No money in the world could buy you happiness and fulfillment.

6. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY

As wise people say: failures are the pillars for success. Sometimes when you work hard, and you give all your heart and soul in your job, failure and critics could be painful. You take it extremely personally without understanding that rejection is a part of life.

Sometimes things just meant not to work out, and you have to let go so that better things could come along.

7. BE LIKE WATER

In most Hollywood movies the perfect businessman or a billionaire entrepreneur is shown as a stubborn and strict person. While real-life experience shows that to achieve great highs you have to be able to adapt. The most successful people are flexible and know how to deal with different situations and how to speak to different people. You need to adjust to survive.

8. NEVER STOP LEARNING

The worst mistake anyone could make is to decide that they are enough. No, I am not saying that you need to constantly compete with others and never stop working. Learning, on the other hand, is different. There's something to be learned from everyone, so work to gain some new knowledge every day.

9. TEAM COUNTS

Every great idea needs a team to make it breathe. Without a good team, even the greatest ideas could die. That is why you should never underrate team job and invest in your team members and the quality of their job.

You may think sacrificing sleep, exercise, and nutrition in service of pushing yourself to work longer hours and take on more responsibilities would be a good call in the short term. But the short term has a way of turning into long term and your health will eventually disappear.
