10 tips for for the first time business traveler

Doing anything for the first time is an odd experience for anyone. It usually entails us to be out of our comfort zone and seeing new things in another perspective. This is likely the same feeling when we are going on our first business trip. It’s almost quite exciting and interesting to be given this chance by your company or business.

However, if it is your first time to do a business trip, you have to acknowledge that it is different from travel for fun and you have to prepare, so you have good results when you return home.

Just like any business venture, the keyword for success in this venture is preparation. That is why we have gathered around some useful tips and tricks to make your first business trip more smooth and organized.

  1. Always pack as light as possible. If you can get everything you need into your carry-on, it can save you hours. And remember - wearing is not carrying! So stuff your pockets, wear your oversized leather jacket and boots.
  2. Leave a day early if you are flying. Never expect all of your flights to be on time. They might be hours late or cancel altogether. Expect this and plan for it.
  3. Pre-plan your outfits. Even if you are a last-minute packer, spend some time to go through the outfits that you plan to wear during your trip. It will not only save your time and luggage space, but also you will avoid disappointment and frustration when you have an important meeting or a conference, and you just have a pile of mismatched clothing items or no idea what to wear even though your luggage is full of clothes!
  4. Always keep a US$100 bill in your wallet. This can rescue you on many occasions. For example, when ATM is down or when your bank places hold on credit cards when you travel to more unusual countries. No fun if you are checking into a hotel or paying or your dinner at a restaurant and you do not have enough cash.
  5. Always have a small first-aid kit with you. A small amount of the panadol, charcoal pills, anti-diarrhea, cough drops will make a huge relieve for you when you need them. Nothing sucks like an upset stomach during your business trip.
  6. Be careful with data roaming; it can be a killer on your phone when you get your bill. Find out if your phone company has a roaming plan before you leave or buy a local SIM.
  7. Never check a bag. And never means never! If you have to switch flights, you lose your flexibility. Also, checking a bag means extra time at the front and back of your trip. You have to interact with staff to check it, and then you wait for it to (hopefully!) arrive on the baggage carousel.
  8. If you are traveling internationally, don’t forget to pack electrical adapters. It can quickly become a significant issue if you can’t charge your phone.
  9. Buy a suitcase that is comfortable to wheel around. After all, a comfortable suitcase will be your best travel companion, and it must be trustworthy and reliable!
  10. Bring earplugs and a sleep mask. First night at a hotel is usually worst in terms of your sleeping. Even if you avoid street noise and loud bars nearby, your body still needs to adjust and adapt to a new place and earplugs and a sleep mask in your bag can help significantly improve your sleep.
Expect good things to happen and they will! We wish you the best business trip ever!
